High oxalates can lead to a condition called “su High oxalates can lead to a condition called “sulfur-wasting”, whereby this important compound is excreted into the urine.
.
When oxalates get to the kidneys, sulfate and oxalate are bi-directionally exchanged across the membrane. So when oxalates are high, you move more sulfate into the kidneys which then gets excreted in the urine.
.
What happens when we don’t have enough sulfate?
.
> Can’t detoxify hormones.
.
> Can’t detoxify many medications.
.
> Can’t inactivate certain neurotransmitters in the brain causing mood issues.
.
> Can’t make mucin which protects the gastrointestinal tract (this is major cause of IBS!).
.
> Cant detoxify bile acids for excretion.
.
> Can’t make adequate glutathione.
.
> Reduced ability to make hormones as sulfate keeps hormones in circulation and stores them until the body need to use them.

The majority of oxalates in the body are excreted The majority of oxalates in the body are excreted via the kidneys in urine.
.
If you have gallbladder issues and a reduction in bile acid production, dysbiosis, leaky gut, low calcium intake or absorption, Vitamin B6 deficiency, pyrroles, or are consuming too much Vitamin C and eating too many foods high in oxalates then you are at risk of not breaking down oxalate in the gut, causing the kidneys to be overloaded with oxalates.

This build up of oxalate in the kidneys causes kidney stones!!
.
The oxalates can also get through to the bladder causing bladder pain, cystitis and interstitial cystitis

Bile acids aid in the absorption of dietary fats i Bile acids aid in the absorption of dietary fats in the gut.
.
A bile acid deficiency will lead to higher levels of unabsorbed fats.
.
These fats bind to calcium. Since you need calcium to absorb oxalates though the gastrointestinal tract, a reduction in calcium can cause an increase in oxalates.
.
Those will gallbladder issues (including removal of the gallbladder) are at high risk of developing high oxalates! .

Pyroluria, also referred to as kryptopyrroles or p Pyroluria, also referred to as kryptopyrroles or pyrroles, is a biochemical imbalance in the body, causing a build up of pyrroles, which are waste products produced by the breakdown of haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein within red blood cells.
.
Everyone makes pyrroles, however some people produce excessive amounts of pyrroles, which can be a problem as these pyrroles bind and inhibit the utilisation of zinc and Vitamin B6.
.
This can cause a build up of oxalate as Vitamin B6 reduced endogenous oxalate production.
.
I always screen my pyrroles patients for oxalate issues very carefully as these two conditions are very linked.

This is very interesting 👌 . You need lysine fo This is very interesting 👌
.
You need lysine for the body to utilise Vitamin B6.
.
Remember Vitamin B6 reduces endogenous oxalate production 🤗
.
Lysine is an essential amino acid meaning that you need to obtain it from your diet as your body can’t make it 😳
.
Foods high in lysine include:
.
Chicken
Dairy products
Fish
Lamb
Chickpeas
Lentils
Mung beans
Soy beans
Watercress
Whey protein

Low Vitamin B6 levels can increase oxalate levels Low Vitamin B6 levels can increase oxalate levels as Vitamin B6 reduces endogenous oxalate production.
.
So what can cause low levels of Vitamin B6?
.
> Inadequate dietary intake.
> Poor gut function
> Excessive alcohol intake
> Oral contraceptive pill.
> CBS pathway upregulation (here B6 is being used to create glutathione. This often occurs with chronic inflammatory conditions including gut issues).
> Pyrroles.
.
Foods high in Vitamin B6 include:
.
Avocado
Bananas
Carrots
Chicken
Egg yolk
Chickpeas
Lentils
Salmon
Tuna Sunflower seeds
Walnuts

This is a very important link to understand. . Ca This is a very important link to understand.

Calcium is required to absorb oxalates through the gastrointestinal tract. To do this you need to be consuming approximately 800mg of calcium per day.
.
The catch is that foods high in oxalate bind to calcium, causing lower levels available for use in the body (including oxalate absorption)
.
Two ways to correct this are:

1. Avoid all foods VERY HIGH in oxalates (you can find a list at www.lowoxalate.info)

2. Take calcium citrate and magnesium citrate (magnesium also helps oxalate absorption) before each meal

There are certain ‘healthy’ bacteria in the gu There are certain ‘healthy’ bacteria in the gut that degrade oxalates including:
.
Lactobacillus paracasei
Lactobacillus fermentum
Lactobacillus salivaris
Lactobaciluus rhamnosus
Oxalobacter fomigenes
Bifidobacteria species
.
Tips on how to grow your own healthy bacteria
.
> Reduce any bad bacteria or yeast using berberine, garlic, thyme, oregano.
.
> Increase your good bacterial with prebiotic fibres which include:
.
- Vegetables!
- Partially hydrolysed guar gum
- Arcacia gum
- GOS (galactooligasaccharides)
- FOS (fructoloigosacchardies)
- Slippery elm
.
You can also take these oxalate degrading stains in a probiotic at the same time as taking prebiotics!

A yeast (or candida) overgrowth in the gut can inc A yeast (or candida) overgrowth in the gut can increase oxalates in two ways:.
.
1.	Yeast species contain oxalate and when in the gut will increase the overall amount of oxalate in the gut.
.
2.	Yeast overgrowth can lead to a reduction in beneficial bacteria than can break down oxalate in the gut.
.
Top tips for getting rid of yeast/candida 😊
.
Eliminate sugar and yeast from your diet 👍
.
Supplement with Berberine, garlic, or oregano to reduce amount of yeast 👍
.
> Molybdenum breaks down the toxic metabolites (acetylaldehyde) that are produced by yeast (candida) so that they can be excreted from the body. Acetylaldehyde commonly causes brain fog 👌
